8 Important Things You Need to Do Before Going on Vacation

8 important things you need to do before going on vacation

Every once in a while, you just might want to pack up and take a road trip with your family, right? Or maybe you are always looking forward to your summer vacation every year. That’s good, that’s really good. But you know you can’t just leave your home at a moment’s notice – you need a plan.

If you neglect to prepare for your vacation, your house can become vulnerable to robbers. And not only that, you might come home to disaster – dead plants, flooded living room, etc.

And so, to have peace of mind and really have a wonderful time while on vacation (meaning no worries), you need to do certain things before going on vacation.

Refer to the list below and you will have a worry free vacation. You can also be sure that you won’t have any unexpected problems when you get home.

Organize Your Mail

If you’re expecting mail, packages, magazine/ newspaper subscriptions while you’re away, you better arrange things beforehand so that these don’t get piled up on your front door.

You have 2 options to handle this matter – first, you can ask a kind neighbor to accept your mail, packages, and subscriptions for you. This way, your neighbor can just keep these things for you while you’re away.

Personally, I like option #2 better (and this is what I do). When I go on trips and vacations, I inform the post office that I am going away. I then make a request to hold everything addressed to me until I come back. With this method, I get to have everything kept safely for me by the post office and they get delivered all at the same time when I get back.

If I have newspaper or magazine subscriptions, I also cancel them before I go away. I have no use for old news and magazines can really pile up if I’m gone for a long time. I know I can always subscribe again anyway too.

Prepare for Garden and Lawn Maintenance

Maintaining a garden is hard work – and you don’t want to throw away all your hard work every time you go on vacation, right? You can ask a kind neighbor to water your plants or just hire someone to do it for you. You just don’t want to come home to dead plants.

Mowing the lawn is also important. Again, you can ask a neighbor or a friend to mow the lawn while you’re away or simply hire lawn service for this task.

Now, mowing the lawn even while you’re away is advisable because of 2 things. First, you don’t want to come home to a jungle (especially if you’re gone for a long time). You want to come home and be welcomed with a well kept lawn that doesn’t scream MOW ME as soon as you get back.

Also, uncut lawn is something that burglars and robbers are looking for. This is a sign that nobody’s home – no, you don’t want to give that away.

Let Your Neighbors Know You’re Going Away

A good friendly neighborhood is really helpful when you are taking vacations. Having helpful and concerned neighbors who are looking out for each other is simply priceless.

If you live in such a wonderful neighborhood, you can get your neighbor’s help every time you’re away on vacation. Just leave them your contact number in case of emergency and you’ll have peace of mind that people are looking after your house when you’re not there.

Always bring something back for your good neighbors too, ok?

Turn Off Unnecessary Water Supply

Broken pipes can really be a big problem and this can happen unexpectedly. So, if you’re not going to be home for days or weeks, it would be wise to turn off the water supply in your home.

If you need water supply for watering your plants, you can just leave the water supply for outdoor use.

Turn on the Lights

If you are always going for vacations, make it a point that you have light timers or light switches outside your house. This way, you can automatically set your lights to turn on at certain times. Or, a good neighbor can switch on and switch off your lights without having to go inside your house.

Again, having some kind of light is an indication that somebody’s home. Robberies are more common on houses with no lights on.

Check Your Food Supplies

If you have perishable food, consume or get rid of them before going away. You don’t want to see them with mold (and bacteria) when you get back.

Empty the Trash Can

You want to come home to a clean and pest free house after having a good time on vacation. So, before leaving the house, make sure that there’s no garbage left inside your home.

Lock Everything Up

Ok, this one is a no brainer – lock all doors when you’re away on vacation. Let me just add this – close and lock all windows too.

Now You’re Ready to Enjoy Your Vacation

There’s nothing like having peace of mind when you’re away from home. And all the tips I just said will make you enjoy your vacation even more.

Also, there’s no place like home. So when you get back, you’ll want to have a clean and peaceful home waiting for you.
